The Power of Advertising

The power that advertising has on our lives is immensely evident.  No matter how much we try to avoid the media throughout our day to day lives, it is constantly in our face telling us how we should look, dress, and act.  Commonly, advertisements try to do whatever means necessary, no matter how unacceptable to the majority of society they are, to think how they want us to think. They try to shape the way we view ourselves, our community, and the world even if it may seem absolutely ridiculous to most of us. This influence from advertising is absolutely everywhere around us and it is practically impossible to avoid the effect it can have on your life. Even the innocence of adolescent children is affected as advertisement companies stoop so low as to make children, little girls especially, feel as if they are not good enough. In my eyes, that is something that no one of that age should have to go through and as a society, we should not give the impression that this type of advertising is acceptable.  Although many of the advertisements today have negative effects on society, there are a few however making a positive impact. These advertisement companies are taking new steps in the positive direction while changing the way we view advertising. If all companies took their advertising in this direction, I think people would be surprised the positive impact it would have on society. It would completely change the way we view ourselves as well as the world by making us aware of the power that words can have.  Unfortunately, this necessary change has not yet happened and the negative effect s of advertising is still abundant in today’s society.
