The Power of Advertising

The power that advertising has on our lives is immensely evident.  No matter how much we try to avoid the media throughout our day to day lives, it is constantly in our face telling us how we should look, dress, and act.  Commonly, advertisements try to do whatever means necessary, no matter how unacceptable to the majority of society they are, to think how they want us to think. They try to shape the way we view ourselves, our community, and the world even if it may seem absolutely ridiculous to most of us. This influence from advertising is absolutely everywhere around us and it is practically impossible to avoid the effect it can have on your life. Even the innocence of adolescent children is affected as advertisement companies stoop so low as to make children, little girls especially, feel as if they are not good enough. In my eyes, that is something that no one of that age should have to go through and as a society, we should not give the impression that this type of advertising is acceptable.  Although many of the advertisements today have negative effects on society, there are a few however making a positive impact. These advertisement companies are taking new steps in the positive direction while changing the way we view advertising. If all companies took their advertising in this direction, I think people would be surprised the positive impact it would have on society. It would completely change the way we view ourselves as well as the world by making us aware of the power that words can have.  Unfortunately, this necessary change has not yet happened and the negative effect s of advertising is still abundant in today’s society.

Why WSU??

Surprising enough, when I visited Wright State University for the first time, I actually did not like it very much. Nothing about it stood out to me as a place where I could spend four years of my life and obtain the college experience I was looking for. Wright State, however, happened to be like one of those horrific dresses you pass by in the mall and you tell yourself how you will not be caught dead in a dress like that. Throughout the day, you pass by it again and again and find yourself actually kind-a-sort-a liking it and you figure you will try it on just for a few laughs. Then as soon as you put it on and look in the mirror you are absolutely in love with it and can’t imagine your life without it. In a weird way, that most guys probably will not understand, WSU was like that “ugly on the rack, yet beautiful on you” type of dress. So, once I was able to take a step back from my first impression of WSU and look at it from a different angle, I began to envision it being a place where I could further my education as well as get the college experience I so desperately needed. The things I began to love about WSU were not only the academics, but the atmosphere as well. When I walked on the campus It just felt right to me and I could not deny that WSU was the place I needed to be to fulfill my future educational goals as well as my desired college experience.

We Are the Wolrd

A song that has a significant meaning to me and probably many other people around the world is the new 2010 version of “We Are The World” by all types of artists including Quincy Jones, Wyclef Jean, Jennifer Hudson, Justin Bieber, Lionel Richie and many other notable artists. When I listen to this song, I automatically feel very empowered and connected to the world around me. It opens my eyes as well as my heart to face the fact that as everything in my life is going smoothly, there are people who are struggling every day for the basic necessities to live and are in need of my help. This song was not only for a good purpose with aiding in the relief efforts to help the recently devastated Haiti but also serves as an inspiration for people all over the world. The fact that all of these artists from all different types of musical genres came together to record this song is a clear sign to all of us that when someone needs us, no matter what part of the world they are from , we all need to come together and help in any way possible. Whether we are able to admit it, or not, when people are in a desperate need for help, it is our duty to put aside our differences and put our best foot forward in the effort to help. The artists in this song are clearly making a stand that we are all a part of this world and when it comes down to it, we are all connected to each other by our struggles, successes and love.

Blog about a Blog..?

I have a friend, who is basically like a sister to me. Her name is Caitlin Allen. She is 20 years old and is a junior at Davidson College in North Carolina. She is the type of person that if she wants to do something, she is going to do it, and if it’s a challenge to her, that just makes her experience even better. She has lived her life to the absolute fullest taking advantage of every opportunity that comes around and she is not about to stop now. Just recently, she began a new semester long voyage to Tanzania, Africa for a study abroad program with her school. In Tanzania, she will be living in the town of Rhotia with the Maasai people tribe. Throughout her stay in Africa, she will be blogging about all of her new and exciting things that she is experiencing. In the past 10 days that she has been there, she has already learned so much about the land and the people of Tanzania. Before she left, we were all worried about her because she is an extremely tall, pale, blue eyed, blonde hair girl who is travelling to Africa for the first time, and to be honest, we thought she might stick out. For Caitlin though, nothing is going to hold her back and she is a true inspiration for me and the way I live my life. If you would like to follow her blog and obtain some motivation/inspiration for yourself or to just see what kind of wild animals she ran into that day, the link is :
